This is an area that there is not much information.
Even if you buy the manual for the car it is still very vague. I will attempt
to help in this area. I will discuss removing the steering column and disassembling
it as well. The steering column has to be removed before removing the dashboard.
I replaced my Pontiac steering column and wheel with one from an Olds and
rekeyed it back to the Pontiac.
Removing the steering column is very straight forward.
There are a few things I would like to mention that may save you some time.
If you want to disable the steering lock. It can be done but its part of
the ignition rod. It has to be modified not removed. To disable the column
shifter, it is easiest to cut it off with a saw and not disassemble the
column. If you want to reroute wiring for starting the car with switches.
The wires are all at the bottom of the column. You do not need to take
the column apart.
There are 4 wire connectors at the base of the column.
Left upper is signal lights. Left lower is high low beam. Center top is
back up lights. Right upper is ignition wires. The purple wire is the solenoid.
If you want to move your neutral safety switch to a console shifter, this
is the wire you have to use.
Removal

Now after all that, if you still need to get the column out, remove the through bolt on the upper steering knuckle. When re-installing it, use locktite and torque to 20 ft lbs. Remove all wire connections to the column. Next remove the 4 bolts at the foot of the column at the inner firewall.

Then remove the two large nuts halfway up the column just under the dashboard. This picture shows the curved dash piece that the column is bolted to. On re-assembly torque these bolts to 40 ft lbs. The steering column is now free to come out.

There is only 2 tricks to disassembling a steering column. After you remove the horn and the wheel. A wheel puller cost about $7.00 at the cheap tool store. You have to push down on the plastic plate and you will see a retaining clip. You have to push down hard. There is a large spring behind the plate. A tip is to go to a cheap tool store and they sell a tool for about $8.00 that holds this plate down for you. It will be money well spent. Remove the retaining clip by prying it off with a good strong finish nail. The only other trick is to pull all the wires out of the signal light plug at the bottom of the column. These wires have to come up through the column to remove the signal light assembly. They cannot come up through the column with the plastic plug still attached. Make sure you write down the order in which you remove them. The rest of the column comes apart quite easily. One bolt changes the lock. To disable the shifter lock you have to cut away all the metal in the column sleeve. To disable the steering lock you have to grind a piece off of the vertical key gear. I hope I have saved you some time and energy here. You get to keep the tools. Price $0.00
