Installing Madras Tips

When we removed our Mat-Co-Air metal wing covering we found the wingtip bows had been cut severely during the modification and would need replacing. The cost of replacement would be more than double the cost of a set of Madras Super Tips and we figured the addition in performance would be well worth the effort of installing the tip. I was wrong. I won't get into this too much, but basically the Madras mod requires the removal of the tip bow. and installation of a new wing tip rib that accommodates the fiberglass booster tip. Here you can see the cuff that reinforces the existing spar tip extension and the new rib installed.  If you're considering installing the tips... don't... I've been informed the company is no longer in business... all the same, I'll provide some of the details, just in case you're considering some other option??

This is the forward spar reinforcement. Both compound curve leading edge skins are removed from the last two rib bays and replaced with flat skins provided by Madras. Only two of the four provided by Madras, actually fit. The leading edge rib formers provided also did not fit. Not even close. Madras was unable or unwilling to solve the problem, but informed me I was the first to complain. I've since found others had the same problem and many just build their own functional parts.

Inside view of the leading edge.

Trailing edge view from inside. In the end we got it all together on our own. It looks okay, but I wouldn't do it again. Unfortunately with the engine upgrade, I don't think we'll ever be able to quantify the performance gained with this mod.
