April 2nd, 2006 - The
Final Masters B Cup Shaheen FC vs Meraloma FC at Boulevard Park, North Vancouver. 13th & Grand Blvd. Sunday 2nd April, 2006. On the North Shore on a cloudy but non-rainy day. Almost complete opposite from last years Final, no-one can forget that horizontal freezing rain. A year later, we wanted to avenge the PK shootout loss. Team: Bruce, Eric, Trant, Ed, Gehan. John, David N, Marty, Stottie, Jeff, Rob, David R, Art, RJ, Mike and Colin for the photos. Missing was Scott and Russell. In the stands: Simon, Christine, Chris, Jackie and their 2 little ones, Jenn and Lester and Eric's wife and baby Becket plus Gehan's wife with their 2 little ones. On the kick off Shaheen started very well playing the ball around the back and keeping the possession for the first 3 minutes. We finally got a touch of the ball and started to get into our rhythm with Bruce hassling their defense line and with that we started to get more into the game. Ed and Gehan picked up a yellow each for descent and a tackle from behind. The back four were winning everything and that gave us momentum. We won a free kick on the right hand side and John floated it in and Marty out jumping their keeper even with out stretched arms, 1-0 to Meraloma. Soon after from pressure in deep a square ball was intercepted from Bruce, slotted it low, 2-0. Ok, we were in the driving seat and with great teamwork kept putting on the pressure and from a corner clearance came to Stottie who with great composure thumped it for the third from 25 yards. We were off with 10 minutes to go in the first, we kept stomping out their attack with solid defending, picking up the pieces in the midfield, using our speed and skill up front, this was our game and we wre in control and were nearly rewarded with a 4th after a breakaway 1-1 with the keeper, too much time on Dazzles hands, I guess. Then some great work and effort from Mike and then Gehan lifting it to 6 yard box, Art knocking that one for the 4th. After a corner Marty's header cleared off the line and RJ shot the ball over to next week, no 5th there. At the half a commanding 4-0 lead to the Lomas, the old boys in orange, The Meraloma Over 30's 4 Shaheen FC 0. 2nd half, we were facing a strong wind, that favoured us in the first. And Shaheen took advantage and for the first 15 minutes we were disciplined to keep it together. With solid keeping from Rob, who saw everything and great hands kept it clean and tidy. After this 15 minutes with a couple of wild shots from them, the game turned back in our favour after Bruce shot high. After some solid midfield play from Ed, to release Dave Rayworth on the left wing, skipping a challenge, crossed the ball into the 6 yard box, Eric leapt and no mistake for number 5. We were in commanding pole position and despite the wind and the first 15 minutes a solid defensive unit were playing well and drawing many offsides. We were jogging this game out and a 6th came from John after a wing play deep on the left knocking it back to get a lucky deflection, 6-0. The 7th came from a left midfield pass that skipped over RJ and Gehan with great strength slotted it home. 7-0. We then just kept doing what we had been doing all game, making challenges, winning possession, moving the ball well and our peg-leg sub Colin was nearly rewarded from a shot that went over from the top of the 18 yard box. In the last couple of minutes, I even tried to win the scoring race but couldn't dig the ball off my right side for a left foot shot. Final whistle: Meraloma FC 7 - Shaheen FC 0. We outworked, out hustled and beat them in every department. This was as solid as a team performance that you could get; determination, discipline, teamwork and heart. 7 different scorers just showed our depth and team work and despite the one sided score line you all played with great passion, great commitment and it was fun. This was our day and you deserved it. You can yourself Cup Winners. What a great way to sign the year off. Awesome, absolutely awesome. You guys were tops. WInners are Grinners T> |
