On March 5, 2001 I was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic. My doctor advised me that if I could lose a few pounds, and exercise, I could probably get my blood sugar levels under control -- the other alternatives were medication, and perhaps worse (needles?). I ran home, surfed the net, and found two newsgroups: alt.support.diabetes, and alt.support.diet.low-carb. From them I got some great information and advice regarding diabetes and weight loss.
I decided that a low carbohydrate diet was the way to go -- the theory being that if one's carbohydrate intake is kept low enough, the body will burn its own fat to get the energy it needs. It sure worked for me.
For exercise, I purchased a treadmill which I hit every morning -- I am now up to two miles a day (fast walking). I also swim two or three times a week -- depending on what's happening and if the pool schedule coincides with mine.
My diet is very similar to the Dr. Atkin's diet, but I didn't read the book until after I had lost 80 pounds! I wish I'd read it sooner as it contains a lot of very good information as to how the body works with respect to foods -- I highly recommend it to anyone who want's to lose weight -- regardless of what diet they decide upon.
I feel good! I feel great! I am fit! I eat right! What more could I ask for? The two photos below, "BEFORE" and "AFTER" show the results up to October 1, 2001. They speak for themselves.
