DOGS

Big Heart Rescue - dogs and cats

BC Poodle and Small Dog Rescue - Poodles, Poodle crosses & other small dogs from high-kill California shelters, as well as local owner surrendered/abandoned dogs & dogs from BC shelters

Bully Buddies - bully breed (and a few other terriers!) rescue based on the Mainland but have foster homes on the Island.

Cat's Cradle - mostly cats but some dogs; based in the Victoria area

Cedar Ridge Collie Rescue - Rough and Smooth Collies, and occassionally other breeds

CRD Pound - Animal Control for the Capital Regional District.  Also see Victoria Adoptables' website for bios and photos.

Chihuahua Rescue (BC) - Mary Ross is the Nanaimo representative.

Dog Bless Rescue Partners - small and medium sized dogs, brought here from high-kill US shelters. They adopt only to the Greater Victoria area.

Greater Victoria Animal Crusaders - dogs and cats

Greyhound Rescue - Northwest Canadian Greyhound League - foster home locations are listed on their website.

Island Dogz - dogs from Taiwan as well as dogs from local pounds.
                  - various breeds but focus on Northern breeds such as Siberian Huskies, American Eskimos, etc.

Mex-Can Pet Partners - street dogs from Mexico.  Also helps other domestic animals in Mexico.

Mosaic Pet Rescue - small and medium sized dogs brought here from a high-kill shelter in the U.S.  Adopt only to Duncan area and south, and the Gulf Islands.

Nana Foundation (Tryntje Horn) - dogs, cats and other animals - they don't have a web site, but can be reached at

Paws Without Borders - both local dogs and those saved from US pounds; based in Ladysmith.

Respect-a-Bull Dog Rescue - bully breeds such as Pit Bull Terriers, AmStaffs, American Bulldogs, etc.
                                          Based in Port Alberni but have foster homes in Victoria, etc.

Second Chances - mostly small dogs; based in Parksville.

SPCA - Duncan-Cowichan Valley & District - easy to get to: located just off Hwy #1.

SPCA - Victoria - located in downtown Victoria

SPCA - others on Vancouver Island/Gulf Islands:
            Salt Spring Island, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Parksville/Qualicum, Comox, Campbell River.

Victoria Adoptables - now do their own rescue, of both local and U.S. dogs, as well as posting several other rescue groups' dogs for adoption on their website.

Victoria Animal Control - pound for City of Victoria and District of Oak Bay

Victoria Pet Adoption Society - operated through Shaw Pet Hospital

Little Mischief Rescue - rats, ferrets, mice, gerbils, degus, rabbits, and other small animals...even had a tarantula!  (Some are in foster homes on the Island; others are on the Mainland.)

Snake in the Grass - snake rescue, adoption and education, based in Victoria

SPCA - Duncan-Cowichan Valley - easy to get to: located just off Hwy #1 - sometimes small pets, horses and livestock in foster homes

SPCA - Victoria - located in downtown Victoria - rabbits, guinea pigs, degus, birds, rats, mice, etc., and
                       sometimes farm animals such as llamas.

SPCA - others on Vancouver Island/Gulf Islands:
            Salt Spring Island, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Parksville/Qualicum, Comox, Campbell River.

 

And a few specific rescues, not based on the South Island, but that help animals from our area:

Hearts On Noses Miniature Pig Sanctuary - Vietnemese pot-bellied and other mini pigs

Island Equine Rescue and Recovery - horses, ponies, donkeys and mules of all ages

Reptile Rescue, Adoption and Education Society - based in Vancouver

Small Animal Rescue Society of BC - rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hedgehogs, chinchillas, ferrets, degus, hamsters, rats, mice, etc.

Turtle Gardens - based in Topley, B.C. but regularly fly/transport dogs to their new homes on Vancouver Island.  Have some foster homes on the Island.

However, not all rescue groups (including the SPCAs) post their animals there, so be sure to check the links above.

** NOTE: while both Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet.com are available to rescue groups in our area, many groups use one
              or the other and not both, so it is wise to check both.
