Fallen at its surface is the re-envisioned story of an angel held in high regards by the Almighty, who eventually rises to challenge the sovereignty of God. Taking a story that is seemingly black and white; to reveal that there is no such division. The play opens by taking the audience into a divided and war torn heaven, deconstructing any preconceived notions of an idealized utopia. As the story develops, it spirals in to focus on the personal story of the hero (or antihero); as he struggles to find himself in a psychological maelstrom, conflicted with what he has come to know and desires. At its heart, Fallen is an allegory, loosely inspired by Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, reflecting the very state of our existence through themes of freedom, choice, and silence. In the end this post-modernist account of the ultimate battle between good and evil will leave the audience asking questions shattering any ideals of an absolute.
