THE OMAR-OSAMA PUZZLE (10 02 02)
Something very strange is happening and few people seem to
have noticed it: until the end of last year there were daily
"progress reports" about US endeavours to capture Osama
Bin Laden and his side-kick Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban
leader. But so far this year the US government and the mainstream
news media rarely talk about either one.
This is very interesting because after the 9-11 attacks was an
instant suspect and President George Bush said repeatedly it
was the intention of the US to bring him to justice. The president
added the US was close to getting him. As for Omar, there were
several news reports that claimed negotiations were under way
in Kandahar to arrange his surrender. Now neither men is hardly
mentioned by the US government and the mainstream media. Why
this sudden change? Is it possible the US doesn't want either
one dead or alive, because dead they would become martyrs which
might generate more attacks by their followers and alive the
two might divulge information that would be damaging to the US.
In the meantime US bombers have pulverized part of Afghanistan
killing several thousand Afghans, many of them civilians and
destroying a hospital and a UN food depot in the process. US
troops have even killed some Americans with so-called "friendly
fire." Since none of the identified hijackers of the planes
that were crashed in the US were Afghans it seems grossly unjust
the Afghan people had to suffer the brunt of US military force.
The caves of Tora Bora were bombed allegedly to "smoke out"
or kill Bin Laden. Osama probably felt quite insulted by the
$25 million bounty on his head since as a multi-million millionaire
he may well have upped the ante to get safe passage out of Afghanistan
which would explain why the US can't find him there.
Now for a quick replay: it is a well-known fact that the US trained
and financed Bin Laden to help get the Soviets out of Afghanistan.
What is less widely known is that the US in concert with Pakistan
helped the Taliban to power. The Taliban were in fact allies
of the US: even after September 11, 2001! Following
the 9-11 attacks the US stated repeatedly it would not oppose
the Taliban if they turned over Bin Laden. If the Taliban had
complied they would still be in power. It is important to note
that until that time there was barely a whisper of protest from
the US re the brutal Taliban regime it had helped to power. Most
of the world's news media obediently followed suit and very few
reported the public executions, the oppression of women and other
acts of barbarism committed by the Taliban.
As so many leaders in the world have experienced before, their
grip on power is assured only as long as they cooperate with
the US, but if they step out of line they suffer the wrath of
the US (Ngo Diem in Vietnam, Manuel Noriega in Panama, Saddam
Hussein in Iraq until he had outlived his usefulness as an opponent
to Iran and yes, even Cuba's Fidel Castro who received initial
support from the US. However, when it became clear Castro was
not going to play by Washington's rules, but by his own his country
was first invaded by US-supported rebels and later punished with
strict sanctions which are still in force today.
Anyone with a modicum of political savvy understands the US never
planned to put Omar and Osama on trial. Why should the US provide
a platform for this hostile duo and risk having all kinds of
examples of US duplicity come to light? Why should it spend years
and countless millions of dollars to prosecute and defend this
odd couple? The option of a secret military tribunal would represent
poor PR on the stage of world opinion and the predictable outcome
of such a trial would be widely condemned.
If Bin Laden and/or Mullah Omar are dead, the US might be reluctant
to announce it since that would give them martyrdom status with
all the inevitable hostile consequences their followers would
embark on to show their loyalty to their martyred leaders. It
would be politically advantageous for the US to keep their fates
secret for as long as possible, preferably until they no longer
matter. This may not be possible, but it may be attempted. It
should also be remembered there is no evidence that either Omar
or Osama were directly involved in the Sept. 11 attacks. However,
there IS evidence Bin Laden was involved in the bombing of the
US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. It is also known the CIA
met with Bin Laden last July (2001). So why didn't they arrest
him? Could this be because of business connections between the
wealthy Bin Laden family and the Bush family?
So, while the question re the whereabouts and fates of Osama
and Omar has remained unanswered (at least until the above date),
it is hardly the only puzzling question. Other pertinent questions
in search of factual answers include:
Who was responsible for the anthrax attacks, and why were Democrats
and the media the principal targets?
How is it possible
that all the 9-11 hi-jackers were identified inside a couple
of days after the attacks (complete with picture ID's!), while
the perpetrators of the anthrax attacks remain unknown months
later?
Did the
CIA have foreknowledge of the 9-11 attack?
Who
tried to profit with options on American, United, Merrill Lynch...
stock just before the hijackers' attack?
Why was
the FBI told to not investigate the Bin Laden family links in
the US?
