COMMENTS:
"Moelaert has somehow managed to pack a great deal
of useful information on the science and politics of cancer,
including how to reduce risks of cancer, into a small and highly
reader-friendly monograph. He is to be warmly congratulated."
DR. SAMUEL S. EPSTEIN
"I have quite a few cancer patients who still believe
in the conventional mutilation treatments. The Cancer Conspiracy
should help them rethink matters."
DR. ZOLTAN RONA
"I think the Cancer Conspiracy is a very good book.
I agree there is a major conspiracy to benefit the bottom line
and to protect one's paradigm or turf. It is important that books
like The Cancer Conspiracy are written to educate as many people
as possible."
DR. ABRAM HOFFERDR.ABRAMHOFFER
"The Cancer Conspiracy is an eye-opening account which
answers many vital questions
to inform and empower the reader."
DR. FRED H. KNELMAN
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
John Moelaert is a writer who specializes in social and environmental
issues. Since 1958 his work has been published in newspapers
and magazines across Canada, in the US and Japan. He has held
several editorships at newspapers and magazines.
His keen interest in social justice and conservation led to his
involvement in many organizations, including Greenpeace, Amnesty
International and the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility.
During the late seventies he campaigned against proposed uranium
mining in his province. More than 100 organizations fought the
British Columbia Government and various mining companies on the
grounds that uranium mining would increase cancer rates. The
three-year battle was won February 27, 1980 when the B.C. Government
announced a seven-year moratorium on uranium mining and exploration.
To this day no uranium mines have been allowed in B.C.
He first became involved in the medical and political aspects
of cancer in 1979 during his mother's illness with stomach cancer
to which she succumbed later that year.
Since then he has done extensive research on the causes, diagnoses,
treatments and especially the politics of cancer. He has written
numerous articles on his findings, addressed various public meetings
and has been frequently interviewed by the news media. During
the eighties he publicly criticized the name of the B.C. Cancer
Control Agency, pointing out that since cancer clearly is not
under control the name was misleading. On February 14, 1990 the
Board of Trustees agreed and changed the name to the B.C. Cancer
Agency.
INTRODUCTION:
If all the years of cancer research had been as effective
as claimed and if all the so-called medical breakthroughs had
been real, obviously fewer and fewer people would get and die
of cancer instead of more and more. The reality is that the public
is being misled on a massive scale. Or as two-time Nobel Prize
winner Dr. Linus Pauling put it: "The war on cancer is largely
a fraud."
In 1971 President Richard Nixon declared "war against cancer."
A cure was widely expected in five to 10 years. Today instead
of a cancer cure we have a cancer epidemic. Cancer now kills
more Canadians and Americans in a single year than all of World
War II did.
In fact, more than twice as many people get and die of cancer
today than was the case in the early seventies. Cancer rates
in Canada and the US have increased far beyond population growth.
The latest statistics show that about 40 per cent of Canadians
and Americans get cancer and most of them die of it.
Countless millions of dollars have been spent worldwide on cancer
research (More than $30 billion in the US alone). Announcements
about alleged medical breakthroughs in cancer research often
coincide with the start of fundraising drives by cancer organizations....
In the meantime our environment is becoming more and more carcinogenic.
The air we breathe, the water we drink and the foods we eat are
increasingly exposing us to cancer-causing agents.
According to the World Health Organization at least 80 per cent
of all cancer is environmentally caused and therefore preventable.
But cancer organizations, research institutions, governments
and corporations direct most of their funds at treatment instead
of prevention.
Treatment often causes more misery than the disease itself and
in most cases is unsuccessful.
Cancer is not only a terrible disease, but it is also a multi-billion
dollar industry. Diagnostic and treatment procedures generate
huge profits and attractive salaries for those involved in the
cancer industry, while prevention is very difficult to cash in
on. The profit motive is the rudder that steers society away
from prevention. The Cancer Conspiracy shows that cancer is much
more a political problem than a medical one. The so-called war
against cancer is for the most part a gigantic hoax and a cruel
illusion. Essentially, the main battle is between corporate wealth
and public health.
To understand the politics of cancer one must penetrate the mass
of misinformation generated by the cancer industry. The cancer
conspiracy involves the government, major corporations, the medical
establishment, the pharmaceutical industry, medical equipment
manufacturers, cancer organizations and even most of the news
media. To varying degrees they all distort and often suppress
critical cancer information. As a result people are denied their
fundamental right to know the facts about cancer, thereby impairing
their ability to make informed decisions.
To conspire literally means "to breathe together."
It also means "to act together, especially disadvantageously."
The title of this book is used in the latter sense.
Most people have neither the money nor the time to buy and read
the numerous books that have been published on the medical, financial
and political aspects of cancer. The Cancer Conspiracy clearly
and succinctly explains the facts and deceptions about cancer.
All facts and figures used apply both to Canada and the US unless
specifically indicated otherwise. It is my hope The Cancer Conspiracy
will serve as a concise --yet comprehensive--source of factual
information on the complex and nefarious politics of cancer and
help readers make informed decisions about cancer prevention
and treatment options.
