1954-12-14: Launched. 1955-06-16: Delivered to Cunard Steamship Co., Liverpool, England. 1955-07-01: Maiden voyage (delayed by a catering strike), Greenock to Montréal, then served the Liverpool-Montréal route. 1957-04-17: Moved to the Southampton-Le Havre-Canada route, and started to be used for cruising. 1961-04-22: Ran aground in Southampton Water en route to Le Havre. 1961-04: Moved to Liverpool - New York service. winter 1962-1963: Refitted for cruising. 1963-01-01: Renamed Franconia. 1963 to 1967: Cruised from New York in the summer and Port Everglades in the winter. 1967-11: Was the last Cunard liner to terminate a scheduled sailing at Liverpool. 1968: Served on a Rotterdam-Canada service. 1969: Converted to a single-class arrangement. 1971: Laid up in Southampton due to a staffing dispute between Cunard and the National Union of Seamen. 1972: Moved to Cornwall. 1973: Sold to Black Sea Shipping and renamed Fedor Shalyapin; chartered to the British company CTC Lines for Australian cruises. 1973: Refit at Swan Hunter, South Shields. 1973-08-20: Departed Southampton for Sydney. 1975: Sub-chartered to Shaw Savill Holidays. 1976-09: After the ship was discovered in a rendezvous with a Soviet submarine, Shaw Savill terminted the charter and returned Fedor Shalyapin to CTC Lines. 1979-12: Australian cruises terminated when Australia banned Russian ships from their ports in response to the invasion of Afghanistan. 1989: Refit and mechanical overhaul. 1990: Registered in Malta, used for low-budget Mediterranean cruises. 1996: Laid up in Iliychevsk, Ukraine. 2001-10: Transferred to the State of Ukraine by a court ruling. 2004: Renamed Salona for her voyage to the breaker's. 2004-02-06: Arrived at the breaker's at Alang. 2004-02-11: Beached at Alang. Reportedly had a permanent list (starboard?) due to a design flaw. |
