Lanny discovered the Indira restaurant which we frequented a number of time. We went for a walk in some of the back streets and alleys. Saw a man with an empty eye socket and a wild eyed mystic with a cobra around his neck. The Indira restaurant curry burned in my stomach all night.
Oct. 1
We got our trekking permits, bought some sugar and small packets of salt to put on the leeches that we were bound to come in contact with. It rained all afternoon amidst steady honking of the cars and the ringing of the rickshaw bells. Tried to phone Lynn to no avail.
The next day we bought some kerosene for our stove and had supper at the Unity restaurant and had peanut butter ice cream!
The First Trek
On October 2 we decided to go. That was our first mistake of the day. It was pouring rain. We had our last breakfast at the Crystal Hotel and put our packs into a taxi. Rain had blocked the road about a kilometer from our starting point so off we went into the warm rain and mist. We got soaked to the skin. We finally pitched our tent on a future rice paddy and didn’t get our sleeping bags out fearing they would get wet as well. I slept in a sweater and woolen knickers and had a surprisingly good sleep.
