Sept.18, 1973
One of the first things that happened on September 18, 1973 is that we got pulled over by the police. We were happily cruising up the highway towards Hope, on our way to Nepal, with numerous spare tires on the roof of Kens old Chev, when a highway cruiser that just passed us, quickly turned around and came up behind us blazing its lights. What now? Were the tires on top deemed dangerous or illegal? Were the three young men in the car looking like criminals? No, Lannys mom had found a pair of crampons on his bed and was worried that he had forgotten them. She had made a call to the Hope police and asked them to pull us over and phone home. Such was our first couple of hours on our trip of a life time. Our trip to see Mt. Everest. ---------- I had carefully gone over the pages of numerous Life and National Geographic Magazines for years and had dreamed of going to see Mt. Everest. I had hiked and done a bit of climbing for some time, and having gone through university and taught for a couple of years, I decided that I was going to have to do something like this now, or never. I had met a wonderful girl and we had said our temporary good byes. I know my mom and dad must of had mixed feeling about the trip, but they were nothing but supportive. I quit teaching, put my Mustang up for sale, and Ken Willis and Lanny Martiniuk joined me on the adventure. |
