I have been photographing exclusively digitally for about ten years, following a progression of careers: appreciating nature as a geologist, manipulating information as a software engineer, and a lifetime of attempting to capture moments in frames as a photographer. I contemplate conundrums like the purpose of art, how to integrate music and images, whether the words professional and amateur can coexist in the same person, and whether reality is out there or in here.
Some of my images are straightforward and graphic, featuring intensely-coloured patterns. Others explore close-up views of ordinary objects around us, the subtleties of patina in worn machinery, the intricacies of plant forms, and gesture and expression in the human face.
We are products of our times and environment. I have been inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész, Arnold Newman, Jay Maisel, and Freeman Patterson.
All images are made using RAW files from Canon digital cameras, edited with Adobe Photoshop, and printed on wide-format printers with archival inks and paper.
I live and work in British Columbia, punctuated by trips abroad to collect material and perspective.
