Hybrid is a board game for 2 players who choose
either the Akkylannian Griffins or the
Dirz Alchemists and play through scenarios
with specific objectives. In each scenario you
set up the square board sections as per diagram.
Then you choose your group of warriors
to take part in the battle and this is done
by the Rank total and number of models allowed.
Models have a rank from 0 to 4 and most scenarios
are around 6-9 rank total and 5 to 9
models. Then you are dealt out 4 action cards
each which can be used during the activation
sequence, you also receive two army specific
cards each, 2 Aura cards for the Griffins and
2 Mutation cards for the Scorpions. The game
uses 10 sided dice.
A game turn consists of rolling to see
who has the initiative and deciding what order you
will move and act with each model. The first
player then turns over his number 1 counter
after each model has been assigned a number
in sequence hidden from your opponent and
activates the corresponding model. Then he
chooses an action mode, either Movement,
Firing, Offensive or Defensive combat. You
can always move your model the total of his
Movement value but the Move Action mode allows
for special types of movement.
The player then proceeds with
the action and say for instance he chose Offensive, he
could then first move his model taking into
account any penalties as described in the
movement rules. Next he chooses his level
of the action which can be from 1 to 6. Now
here comes the most important part of a models
profile. Every character has a Natural
Value or NV and this number stands for the
wound total, also the number that needs to be
rolled (equal to or less then) for success
in any action and the highest action mode you
can choose.
Dice rolls and action mode values can be adjusted
by the action cards. So say the model
has moved then the player whose models NV
is 3 puts down an action card with a value of 2
and decides to increase his action mode to
level 5, (Master Strike) and also adjusts his dice
roll by 2. Now the opponent could use an action
card to hinder the active player. After all
the cards and actions have been chosen
the player rolls and sees if he is successful. Another
important rule here is that a roll of one
is a perfect success and a roll of 10 is a critical
failure no matter what the required value
was modified by. If successful the opposing players
model takes wounds as requires which would
then bring down his NV value and also takes
down the value of his dice rolls and level
of action he can decide on. Now the other player
turns over his number 1 counter and activates
that model and the game proceeds until all
models have been activated and a new turn
starts.
Each character is represented by a card which
shows all the values of all the action types,
also the NV, the Movement value, Class, Equipment,
and Aptitudes which give certain
bonuses to the characters.
There are also tons of counters, doors and
special objective tiles.
There is quite a lot of strategy and the variety
of cards makes for interesting abilities and
all kinds of events to occur.

Updated Mar.21/04 :
See below the first expansion for an already fantastic game. Nemesis
Updated May 25/04 :
Finally have the Nemesis expansion and it was well worth the wait. Excellent
components, cool minis and some great new
scenarios. Also added some more images of the
Nemesis Clone and some of the other miniatures
that can be used in the game.
This expansion adds a lot to the game
and I have already started playing the campaign system
added in the rule book. It's not to role-playing
standards but it does give some story line to the
scenarios you are playing and links them together.
You then gain victory points for your group
of warriors whether they be the Griffins or
Scorpions and these then give you bonuses for the
rest of the campaign. Some of the best additions
to the game are the corridor board sections
and new cards that are added to the existing
ones from Hybrid. Go to the link below for Nemesis.
Updated May 27/04 :
Added another image this time of a Tiger of Dirz, one of the few Rank 2
