| Summer Dance Programs | ||
| BALLET TECHNIEQUE | POINTE & PRE-POINTE | |
| Classes are designed to teach students the fundamentals of classical ballet. The emphasis at the Edmonton Dance Centre is to offer safe and correct training that emphasises both the technique and the artistry which is so imperative in the development of young dancers. | The Pointe and Pre-pointe classes are for more advanced students who are either already "en pointe" or for students who will soon begin pointe work. They are designed to allow the time for special exercises that promote strength and understanding of the technical demands of this specialised area of classical ballet. | |
| REPERTOIRE & VARIATIONS | MODERN | |
| Students in Programs 3 & 4 study the group or solo work of the classical ballet repertoire or may be taught a piece of choreography especially created for their level. Fun and challenging, these classes develop style, stagecraft and teamwork. | Modern dance incorporates a full range of motion and emphasises a flexible use of the spine. It merges the concepts of dropping the weight with the use of gravity, dynamics, suspension, fall, and rebound. Modern dance portrays a feeling, mood, or idea through movement that helps the dancer become a fully expressive tool for choreography. All students serious in dance should see Modern as essential for their development. In addition to teaching modern technique, this class will incorporate creative composition and modern dance education through video footage of leading national and international dance artists. | |
| CHARACTER | ||
| Character is the theatrical presentation of national and folk dance, using original ethnic dance and music adapted for theatre. Later, these dances become the Czardas and Mazurka dances from such ballets as Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and Coppelia. Above all, Character is fun and allows great freedom of movement. | ||
| STRETCH & STABILITY | ACTING FOR DANCERS | |
| Students will move beyond choreographic technique and form to explore the actual sensation of dancing, moment by moment. Through improvisational exercises dancers will explore how emotionality effects movement and how the use of emotion can reinterpret choreography. Whether preparing for "Giselle" or for more contemporary choreography Acting for Dancers will provide students with the tools necessary to chart the deep dive into theatrical performance. Topics to be covered: stage presence, breath and the body, storytelling through action, the moment as it applies to performance and the pursuit of objectives. | ||
| This class offers detailed study of technique and special exercises designed to build flexibility, stamina and strength. Please bring an exercise mat. | ||
| DISCOVERING THE BALLET | ||
| Program 1 and program 2 students will explore and learn about one of the many classical ballets, through dance, stories, music, books, film, and design. | ||
| CREATIVE DANCE | ||
| In this class, the students learn to create dance through natural movement. Activities will emphasise spatial awareness, direction, body parts, dynamics, and rhythm. | ||
