2011 - 2012 Programs

BEGINNER BALLET   BALLET
Our classes are designed to introduce the students to the study of ballet and the joy of movement. Through creative movement and specially designed exercises, the students are encouraged to develop co-ordination, flexibility, strength and musicality. Non-syllabus classes are designed to teach the students about the technical and artistic requirements of classical ballet. These classes cover the vocabulary of steps as laid out by the Royal Academy of Dance at the equivalent level. They offer a free range of settings for the steps and also permit a more "in-depth" study.

REPERTOIRE & VARIATIONS   RAD SYLLABUS
Senior students study the corps and solo work of the classical ballet repertoire - experiencing a little of the professional dancer's life.  Fun and challenging, these classes develop style, stagecraft and teamwork.  Students will have the opportunity to perform these works at the year end performance. These classes teach the students the examination syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dance, a worldwide organization.  The syllabus itself is not a training method; rather it is intended to be used as part of a balanced training system.  For this reason, students who wish to be considered for entry for examinations should be registered in all ballet classes offered at the applicable level.  Further information about the Royal Academy of Dance is available at www.radcanada.org.

POINTE & PRE-POINTE MODERN DANCE
The Pointe and Pre-pointe classes are for more advanced students who are either already "en pointe" or for students who will soon begin pointe work. They are designed to allow the time for special exercises that promote strength and understanding of the technical demands of this specialised area of classical ballet. Modern dance incorporates a full range of motion and emphasizes a flexible use of the spine. It merges the concepts of dropping the weight with the use of gravity, dynamics, suspension, fall, and rebound. Modern dance portrays a feeling, mood, or idea through movement that helps the dancer become a fully expressive tool for choreography. All students serious in dance should see Modern as essential for their development. In addition to teaching modern technique, this class will incorporate creative composition and modern dance education through video footage of leading national and international dance artists.

STRETCH & STABILITY CHARACTER
This class is highly recommended for all students enrolled at the Grade 2 level and above.  This class teaches special exercises designed to build flexibility, stability of the torso and strength. Max. 15 Students. Character dance is the theatrical presentation of national and folk dance - using original ethnic dance and music that has been freely adapted for the theatre. Later, these dances become the Czardas and Mazurka dances from such ballets as Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and Coppelia. Above all, Character is fun and allows great freedom of movement.
