Spandex
Spandex is a synthetic fibre that is made especially so that it is very elastic. In 1959, spandex was invented by DuPont, which he introduced to the clothing industry. Lycra is the trade mark for spandex. Spandex can be stretched over 500% and still recover to the original shape. The material is light, is abrasion resistant, and is stronger and more durable than rubber. Spandex feels soft and smooth. Spandex clothing is resistant to body oils, perspiration, lotions and detergents. It can be found in apparel such as bicycle pants, swimsuites, athletic wear, aerobic wear, ski pants, leggins, socks and belts.

Spandex is made from a polymer containing polyurethane, which is a material that has the elasticity of rubber and the durability of metal and is a type of plastic. Through chemical processing, spandex is formed. Spandex also has segments of polyester. Because spandex provides comfort and softness, it is combined with most fabrics, which uses 3%-30% of spandex. Spandex is made from a type of plastic and chemicals are needed to make plastics. During the process of making plastic, harmful emissions are given off to the environment. Also, plastics can not be organically broken down. Therefore, it is bad for the environment.
