After going through my closet to see where each item was made and who made it, I realized that I do have a lot of clothes. The most surprising thing was all my clothes are popular brands, which probably meant that most of them are made by laborers in undeveloped countries. I usually don't go shopping here in Victoria mainly because I don't have time. I only shop during summer and Christmas break, which is when I am in Hong Kong. I do realize that I spend a lot in HK especially for clothes because my parents always say that. I enjoy shopping so much that I forget about the workers who made the clothes. I would forget about how they are mistreated, how they have to work in an undesirable environment, and how they have to work non-stop just to provide the companies clothes. Buy all these clothes affect the workers around the world. Because I buy a lot, the workers will have to work harder than they do right now to make more clothes. They may even be mistreated more because the employers will try to keep the amount of products produced high. Currently, my lifestyle should be sustainable because it is my parents who are supporting me financially. I do not have to go out to work yet. Also, I don't buy clothes that often except in Christmas and summer. Since I have connections to the popular brands, I get discounts. For example, I get 50% discount on Esprit clothing because my mom's friend works there in HK. In the future, I do not know if my lifestyle is going to be sustainable or not. That is because the prices of clothing keep rising. I might not be able to buy as much clothes as I do right now. Because in the future I will have to support myself financially, I might not even spend that much on clothes. I will only buy what I need. Hopefully in the future it will not be that negative, or maybe I will be an employee at Esprit and get 50% discounts! |
