My Bloody Valentine
(George Mihalka; 1981)
(Paramount)

-Overview-

The lone survivor of a mining accident goes on a killing spree when he discovers that the town carried on with its Valentine’s Day dance. 20 years later the town has its first dance since the murders, and lo and behold, the murders start happening. Could the killer have escaped from the asylum? Could he be killing off townsfolk one by one because of the looming event? Could this film be any more redundant?
It’s actually one of the better American slashers to come out of the 80’s. The story is derivative and the acting is atrocious, but all in all a fun film. It would have been even better if Paramount would have bothered to provide us with the uncut print of the film, rather that simply regurgitating the old butchered version onto DVD in order to make a buck, as is Paramount policy. What we’re left with is what looks like something that could have been a moderately gory and fun slasher epic, if we were allowed to see the killings, rather that quick edits and bad fades. I’m never buying another of their overpriced, bare bones, censored DVDs again unless they smarten up. Which isn’t going to happen. Why couldn’t MGM have picked up the rights to this film? It would have been half the price, and at least they would have done a decent job with it. Oh, yeah… because
Paramount hold onto all of their properties with such a tight fist, they’ll never see the light of day. Incidentally, Anchor Bay was rumored to have approached Paramount to acquire the rights to Friday The 13th for a limited time, so they could do an uncut special edition that it so richly deserves. Paramount countered with a sum so ridiculous that it probably would have put Anchor Bay out of business. Par for the course. Paramount can kiss my ass.
-Sound-

Mono.

-Picture-

Anamorphic Widescreen. The print looks fine.

-Special Features-

Special features? On a Paramount disc? It is to laugh!
-Packaging-

Once again, Paramount has destroyed another classic horror movie cover. Why?

Standard DVD keep case. Furthermore, I unfortunately have the Canadian version, so there’s all this French dotted throughout the cover, which ruins it even further. Paramount seems to be one of the only companies to have adopted this policy. Go figure.
