Unspeakable
(Chad Ferrin; 2000)
(Troma)
-Overview-
After his daughter is killed and his wife is made an incontinent invalid in a car accident, James finds himself all alone. As his former shrew of a wife, Alice, continues her putrid existence comatose in front of the television. Soon James snaps and decides that in order to “save” his daughter, he needs to slice up hookers with a straight razor. Meanwhile Alice falls prey to the depraved coprophilic fantasies of her caretaker while James isn’t home. James spirals deeper into his insanity as he continues his hallucinogenic rampage.
Despite Troma having released the film, it’s actually done by an independent. As a result, nowhere to be found is Troma’s trademark tongue-in-cheek over the top gore and comic relief, replaced instead by a dreary tale of one man’s descent into madness. The film is very low budget, so the acting can be a bit trying at times (with the exception of Wolf Dangler as “Hell”, in a truly brilliant performance). Overall it’s an effective and brutal little gem, having been sadly overlooked most likely due to Troma’s involvement. The kills aren’t as gory as they could be, but they are effective and the overall atmosphere of Unspeakable is dreary and depressing. Plenty of T&A as well in this one. Highly recommended (even for Troma haters).
