Suspiria (Limited Edition)

(Dario Argento; 1977)

(Anchor Bay Entertainment)

-Overview-

A young vivacious student arrives at a world renowned dance academy where she soon discovers that it’s run by a coven of witches who have a habit of murdering students and those who get in their way.

Considered by many to be Argento’s masterpiece, I sadly have to disagree. Suspiria is of course extremely well filmed and has a great atmosphere, the problem is the film tends to drag. The score is brilliant and the use of lighting really sets a foreboding mood within the film. There’s an ok amount of gore, but not as much as in Argento’s later efforts such as Opera or Tenebre. The killings are too sparse and there’s not really enough filler to keep the film from getting bogged down and a little dull. Suspiria does feature one of the most realistic throat slashed ever filmed, but all in all not Argento’s best work.
