-Overview-
Frank Zito is a
deranged man haunted by his childhood and, like so many other psycho killers,
is fixated on the memory of his late mother. His bizarre love/hate
relationship with his mother is the driving force behind his brutal Son-of-Sam
style killing spree that terrorizes the city of New York.
Zito is played by the late Joe Spinell, a great character actor known for
small gangster-type roles in movies such as Rocky and The Godfather. This is a
great performance here, with the role demanding at times subtely and other
times almost over-the-top insanity.
The special effects- provided by the legendary Tom Savini- are spectacular,
and the highlight of the movie is a sequence in which a character played by
Savini himself is practically decapitated by a shotgun blast.
The story is a bit on the simplistic side, but there is a great deal of
suspense in several of the stalking scenes, and the sequences in which Zito
gibbers insanely to a mannequin within his small apartment are strangely
fascinating. It may sound cliche, but you know, they just don't make movies
like this anymore.
