Hybrid

(Fred Olen Ray; 1997)

(Retromedia)

-Overview-

The year is 2069 and the world has been decimated by a brutal intergalactic war. Much of humanity has perished, save for a few survivors. A small abandoned group of scientists and soldiers have the misfortune of having their ATV vehicle break down in the middle of the desert, and they stumble across a lone ruffian. The group continues after one of the worst fight scenes ever filmed, and they come across some sort of research compound, deserted, of course. They soon discover that a hybrid cockroach/snake/man is inside the compound and it’s eager to kill them all.

Fred Olen Ray’s films are often hit or miss. While nowhere near as bad as the atrocious Alien Dead, Hybrid is essentially a man-in-a-rubber-suit alien ripoff. The acting is beyond atrocious, and the gore effects range from palatable to pathetic. The only saving grace is the film’s tongue-in-cheek approach and a gratuitous lesbian shower scene courteous of the lovely JJ North and the so-so Brinke Stephens. Good for a laugh.
