Ginger Snaps: Unleashed (Theatrical)
(Brett Sullivan; 2004)
(Lions Gate)
-Overview-
In this, the sequel to the much adored Ginger Snaps, we find Bridget out on her own after having been infected by the werewolf ailment. Being hunted by another werewolf, Bridget hides out in sleazy motels at night and feverishly searches for a solution at the local library. Dosing herself with the Monkshood concoction to keep herself from turning, she eventually passes out and awakens to find herself in a hospital ward for troubled teens and drug addicts. Here she meets a young girl who goes by the name of Ghost who has been orphaned after her Grandmother was horribly burned in a fire. Fearing that she will be found by her pursuer, Bridget frantically tries to discover a way out of the hospital before either the other werewolf shows up or she turns into one herself, having been deprived of the Monkshood. Mayhem ensues.
This installment in the series takes quite a different direction that the first. The film is dark and dreary, and there’s actually very little gore this time around. I found that there’s a sort of odd feel to the film that makes one uneasy while watching. Also a disappointing lack of T&A despite some decent potential. Ginger Snaps: Unleashed is well written and acted, and the effects are well done. Worth checking out for fans of the first film.
