Deadbeat At Dawn

(Jim Van Bebber; 1988)

(Synapse Films)

-Overview-

In the underworld of the American Midwest two rival gangs, the Spiders and the Ravens, rule the streets. Goose, the leader of the Ravens, decides on one final drug deal before leaving the gang and settling down with his girlfriend. His life crumbles around him, however, when his girlfriend is brutally murdered by members of the rival gang.

Absolutely brilliant film. Jim Van Bebber is truly a genius. Deadbeat at Dawn is gritty, surreal and ultraviolent with enough gore to satisfy even the most jaded of gorehounds. The story is excellent, as are the performances by all involved. Wonderful effects considering the shoestring budget. The DVD includes a short film by Van Bebber entitled My Sweet Satan, which is excellent as well, along with the Skinny Puppy music video, “Spasmolytic” that Van Bebber also directed, hidden as an Easter egg. Run, don’t walk to pick this one up. Essential viewing.
