The Government of Scotland had no regular method of raising money in the 17th Century before the advent of the Poll Tax. This was a tax on the "head" of every person over 16 years of age. In order to determine who those persons were, a survey or census had to be taken. The first of which we have a record in Scotland is the Aberdeenshire Poll Book of 1696.
The Aberdeenshire Poll Book was a kind of census of all pole able, ie taxable, individuals for the year 1696. For Glenbucket the value of the estate was established as £75. This value was accumulated from the 184 adults listed. Children under 16 were not listed unless they had some estate value. The total population of the parish in 1696 was probably in excess of 400, compared with 535 in the first detailed census of 1841. There are only 14 clachans in the 1696 Poll whereas there were 38 by 1841.
This copy of the Aberdeenshire Poll Book of 1696 was published in:
Herewith is the literal transcript of that Poll.
