Example of a Howework Assignment
Students are given assignments from the text to explain the reasons for phenomena in each chapter. Here again, I believe it is very useful to split the questions from the explanations. This is much more useful than a fill-in-the-blank format in paragraphs.

Explanations
- How is is possible for the DNA in the nucleus to control metabolic functions in the cytoplasm? What are some functions? (Page 43 & 485)
- Mitochondria produce a form of energy. What is this form and why is it usable (pg 45)? What chemicals are needed to make it?
- Why do EM's show the cell membranes as two dense lines separated by a "clear space?" (EM=Electronmicrograph)
- Why is the cytoplasm gel-like (pg 47 bottom)?
- Why does the protein portion of a cell's intracellular membrane vary a lot? (**ASK)
-
- Why is the word "fluid" in the expression "fluid mosaic model" of a cell membrane?
- Why is the word "mosaic" in the expression?
-
- What is the endomembrane system?
- How does a lysosome operate for?

NOTE: This is only the first sheet of several on the cell and cell membrane. Much of the worksheets overlap with material given in interactive lectures. This reinforces understanding and memory and is also useful for students who are on sporting trips etc.
