More than just a pretty face....
and other observations on school libraries and teacher-librarianship

by Donald Hamilton

being a collection of the best pieces from "The Other Hand" (School Libraries in Canada), "The Deep End" (BCTLA Bookmark) and other journals.

Author's note:  Many of these pieces are old, boring, cranky, pessimistic and dull.  Some are not.  All may be used in any way that might enhance arguments for the provision of school library programs that will make a difference in the lives of children.  Requests for reprints are welcome.  Please contact me at 250-383-5448   donaldhamilton@shaw.ca

Donald Hamilton has had a long history in school librarianship in Canada.  He has served as President of the Canadian School Library Association.  In 1987 he was awarded the "Margaret B. Scott Award of Merit" by that Association.  In the years 1971 to 2000 he was the Education Librarian at the University of Victoria (B.C.)  That position involved him in the preparation of teacher-librarians at UVic and in extensive in-service work in Canada.  He was the Chair of the Forging Forward Symposium held in Ottawa in 1997.  He retired in 2000. He is the Past-Chair of the BC Coalition for School Libraries (http://bccsl.ca) and a trustee on the Greater Victoria Public Library Board.
