Sailing the Olympic Journey
                US Sailing Team

Accomplishing our mission will require time, money, perseverance and a little bit of luck.

Using a three step approach, we have three missions.

1) Qualify for the US Sailing Team every year leading up to the Olympics.
2) Win the Olympic Trials for 2008 Olympic Games.
3) Win a Medal in the Olympics under the US Flag.

The Plan

Training is essential to making the Olympic Team. The most successful training programs we studied combine individual training with dedicated training partners from other countries and an extensive amount of time at international events.
Our training plan involves traveling to different locations to experience diverse sailing conditions and the opportunity to tune against other teams. Some training will be done on an individual basis to develop superior boat handling skills. Getting the most out of individual training will involve studying film of ourselves and competitors. Coaching will be utilized on an individual basis when funds are available to compensate a critical eye to assist in our self assessment.
International events and competitors are probably the most valuable aspect of training. The only way to become the best is to compete against the best from every country possible. International events provide the opportunities to sail in fleets with large numbers and multiple countries. The best sailors from around the world often get together in various locations in Europe. The more regattas we can sail against the best the better we will become.
Off the water workout programs consist of weight training and aerobic exercise. The 49er is a largely physical boat and requires strength, endurance and flexibility. Off the water routines will emphasize each area, strength, endurance and flexibility targeting specific exercises to compliment the movements required while sailing.
Crew weight is also a factor for consideration to be competitive in the 49er. Maintaining our target crew weight is important. To accomplish this requires a proper nutrition program to maintain a balance between weight control and energy for maximum performance.
We will also occasionally sail in other types of boats to reinforce, broaden and improve on tactics and new developments which could be carried over to the 49er. These will occasionally be on keel boats as well as small one designs
