Daryl's 53' steel

These are pictures of a Roberts 53' steel sailboat. The owner lives in Delta Vancouver BC.
We found his project on the internet and contacted him to get some advice. He was more
than happy to share his experience and we are very grateful to him for that.
He has been working on his project for about 10 years now off and on. A new family
member has delayed the the official launch date. But as he said, a new crew member on a boat
this size will come in handy.....
We visited with Daryl and his boat for an afternoon this spring. We were astounded with the
size of the boat and a little overwhelmed with all the details of construction. None the less
he provided us with terrific advice, and he is very proud of his creation, as he should be.

The boat has been here for awhile so there is a little staining from dirt.

The oil barrel is not staying !! He is using it for heating the interior during the winters
while working on it.

He did a great job on the hull. Radius plating is close to perfect. There is a coat of epoxy
paint over the hull to protect the steel. He has not done any finishing to the hull yet. That being said, you can see how good the workmanship is on the following pictures.

The side plate to radius plate seam is the only evidence that the hull is not one big
piece of steel from top to bottom.

Here you can see his keel cooling concept. He added keel cooling after the keel was
constructed. After seeing his design, we decided to do the same thing.
