Two years ago, when I said it takes a village (and a lifetime) to create a novel, I was telling the truth. But now, two years and three books later (can you believe we now have five books coming out!) my village has grown to the size of a small city. There is so much involved in writing a book, and so many people contribute in one way or another, that I could probably never thank them all, but I'm going to try.
Still at the top of my list are my parents. I am eternally blessed to have the incredible loving family I have. Are we perfect? Not by a long shot. We laugh and we fight. But when it comes down to it, we always know we have each other's backs. And it's wonderful when families grow, as my brother has brought his wife Bonnie and daughter Shelby into our fold, both of whom have brought an amazing new dimension into our family life. And my parents each have new partners as well.
Teachers have made a huge and meaningful impact on my life. There are so many I remember fondly, all the elementary teachers who taught me the love of books at Highwood Elementary in Calgary, Mr. Tarr and Mrs. Talbot (who are now Mr. and Mrs. Tarr) in Victoria, who helped me through the transition of moving further west, Mr. Mundy in school band, Mr. Morgan and his love of science, and so many others at David Cameron Elementary, George Bonner Junior High, and Cowichan Senior High School.
I have great friends. Carol and Ramona have been there forever, through laughter and tears. Brad from high school, who I just recently found on the internet (there's got to be a novel in there somewhere, right?) Old work Friends Barb and Nancy gave me my first job opportunity after high school and taught me how to drink and swear (both of which we
ve all since reformed from), Mimi was a great boss and friend and everyone at the Calgary Centre For Performing Arts who allowed me into their magical world. And then there's Sandy, who rates her own page on this website, please have a look.
The most amazing thing that I have found, though, is how amazingly helpful and hopeful everyone is about the novels. It's one of those “restore your faith in humanity” moments. People I haven't seen or talked to for years jump forward to help out. Dr. Daryl Penner (world's best dentist) has become my medical advisor and networks me with a whole line up of medical friends and experts. Allan Radke (my favourite lawyer) always takes time to explain the criminal code to me as well as telling me how things would probably turn out in court in the real world. Everyone at Fire Hall #4, under the leadership of Captain Joe Grassi, opened their doors to me, shared their experiences and even took me out on calls. Anyone who even hears about the books always seems to be willing to sit down and answer my questions without hesitation.
Remember, the world is filled with wonderful people who have amazing stories to tell. Never judge a book by its cover!
