Golden Ears Mountain

Summer Ascent

June 8, 2003. My most recent ascent of Golden Ears Mountain. It was a lightweight trip starting at 9:45am. Reached Alder flats at 11 and then began the hard part up the ridge. Arrived at the new shelter, right at the base of the peak around 1:45 and snacked for about 20 minutes.

North Ear summit: 1706 meters. From the new shelter, it doesn't take more than 45 minutes to reach the summit. I made the final step to the top at 2:30 to wonderful views. This photo looks south toward Edge Peak and Blanshard Needle on the right. The snow-capped mass of Mount Baker stands in the top left corner. You can see a discussion of this trip at an online forum found here.

A Spring-time photo of this striking summit. The route comes from the right of the frame, along Panorama Ridge, where a new, first class shelter has been built. I was mountain biking East Canyon Trail this day. I really like how there are no sharp edges here. The smoothness of the snow almost resembles a long exposure of a flowing brook.Taken April of 2003 on Fuji NPS 160 ISO print film at 300mm.

Winter Trip

It's December 27, 1995  and Brian and I are staking our way up to the North Ear and across Panorama Ridge. I planted a few highly visible flags since we may be returning to the the cabin in the dark. The 12 kilometer trek is a good workout as you gain 1500 meters in altitude and the views are absolutely worth it.

The peak of Golden Ears; elevation: 1706 meters.  From the snow covered summit you can Edge Peak (1646m) as the evening sun helps create a stunning panoramic. This ranks as one of my favourite hikes all time.

And the south peak with Pitt Lake in the distance. We stayed in the mountain shelter at the base of the ridge saving us the weight of a tent. In fact, it was relatively comfortable. As is the tradition when I do overnight winter trips, the weather turned foul the next morning as we descended back to the car.
