Arrowsmith Massive- Just as the sun was about to dip over the horizon, I decided to look behind me: WOW ! Enough said.

As we camped on the saddle between Mt Cokeley and Arrowsmith, we witnessed a dazzling show. The sun can really paint a nice picture. These two mountains are located about midway up Vancouver Island and near the town of Port Alberni.

The Three Valleys in China ? No. But it sure looks similar.  A vertically composed zoom on the waters around Port Alberni. This is one time where atmospheric haze can enhance a composition.

breakfast.jpg (102749 bytes) The next morning Dom and I gulp down a quick breakfast of oatmeal and soup. Even at the peak of summer, it's still cold. We had a 3 man tent and a tarp where we stored our gear and ate dinner.

Arrowsmith Massive from the west ridge on Mt. Cokeley. The saddle between the two is visible in the center, and the steep slope toward Arrowsmith is on the right. The peak of Mt. Arrowsmith is not in view here.

arrowsmith approach.jpg (104160 bytes) The daunting challenge before us. Dom and Alison survey what awaits us. It was really quite steep and we clung to our ice axes in case we should slip off the sides. At the top, we used hand- and foot-holds to reach the ridge. From there, going left you traverse the massive until reaching the base of the final peak.

The summit of Mt. Arrowsmith is seen on the far left where a beacon stands guard. This picture waited nearly 2 hours as clouds obscured the peak. All above photos printed and scanned from Fuji Astia 100 ISO slide film. Canon Rebel G.

Summit 2002

arrowsmith summit 02a.jpg (174613 bytes) Canada Day: 2002. For the second year in a row, Dom and I assaulted Mount Arrowsmith on the First of July, but this time via the Judges Route. This route is more strenuous than the saddle route since it begins at a lower elevation (750 metres) and goes straight up with no let down.

We reached the 1819 metre summit after 2.5 hrs of arduous hiking and scrambling.  As usual, the peak was clouded in but we did get a few shots off. Here you can see the weather station on the slightly lower peak. Beyond sits Arrowsmith Massive, the ridge you scale on the saddle route.

arrowsmith summit 04.jpg (141652 bytes) The steep rock face is daunting. You must scale the curving spine of Arrowsmith to summit. The brown square to the left is one of two helicopter landing pads. The summit sits atop near vertical twin towers with shear cliffs on all sides.

A few lakes are located to the Eastern side of Mount Arrowsmith, as you look toward Nanaimo. In the center is Fishtail Lake and to its right Hidden Lake.  All four photos in this group taken on Fuji Superia 400 print film taken on Elan 7e with 28-90mm lens.
