THE SHORTY ROGERS QUINTET WITH
GUEST VOCALIST
JERI
SOUTHERN
Studio West CD #101CD, issued 1990.
| Jeri sings
on 3 sides: "Down With Love,"
"Spring Will Be a Little Late This
Year," and "I Hadn't Anyone Till
You." These recordings were made in the
early 1960s and leased to the Navy Department to
be incorporated into a recruitment promotion show
called, "The Navy Swings." (The
announcer on the show was George Fenneman, the
well-known straight man on Groucho Marx's
"You Bet Your Life.")

The accompanying booklet says of Jeri: "Her intriguingly sensual,
slightly detached vocal style attracted national
attention and a Decca Records contract in the
early 50s. Southern dubbed Rita Hayworth's
singing voice in the film Fire Down Below,'
and recorded for the Capitol and Roulette labels
in the late 50s before she retired from
performing in the 60s to teach. Jeri
Southern died August 4, 1991, her work continuing
to be highly regarded by musical
connoisseurs."

Smithsonian Collection
of Recordings (7 LPs)
Includes JS vocal: "Dancing on the
Ceiling" (reissue of version on Decca DL
8214)
The accompanying booklet includes a photo of Jeri
and this comment:
"Southern's rendition of Dancing on
the Ceiling' is carefully calculated in its
musical and lyric values, and the architecture of
the melodic phrases is outlined with considerable
skill...this recording is a good example of the
graceful intimacy she brought to song
performance."
