David Bynoe

This piece was part of a group show where artists were invited to create site specific pieces exploring the public/private nature of a suburban backyard.

I decided that my contribution would be a 20 foot tall wooden periscope that was set up to allow full rotation and tilt of the upper mirror. This feature allowed the periscope to peer down into surrounding properties, and even over the house to see who was coming up the street or alleyway.

The scope worked remarkably well at spying on the neighbors who fortunately found the whole thing rather amusing. I think the warning signs that I posted around the neighborhood helped.
