ASSIGNMENTS

Here are the Assignments. All have to be completed to finish the course. The due dates given are meant as guidelines to help you judge your time. If you have completed an assignment in another course that is similar to any of the ones listed below and you want to rework it, please check with me first before you do it. Thanks !!

1. Email (10%) Make sure you contact the facilitator by Email at least two to three times a week. Contact the other members of the class as well using the Email Web page to get started. This assignment is ongoing for the duration of the course. Make sure you send the facilitator a copy of the messages you send pertaining to the course. It will help your mark. Your mark is a reflection of the number of Emails you send during the course.

The objective is to get the student familiar with using Email and each of the different components listed in it, eg. attachments, reply, reply to all, creating an address book, signature file, etc.

2. The Learning Log (20%) is important. It will contain hopefully reflections on how you the student has grown with respect to the Internet through out the course. This log is to be submitted electronically ( according to the due dates listed below ) for each week of the course for a total of 11. Please read the hot linked lecture for each week and the corresponding text chapter and then write the learning log. Learning Logs # 1 to 10 are worth up to 1.8 marks each and Learning Log # 11 is worth up to 2 marks for a total of 20 marks. Thanks !!

The objective is to make sure each student uses the Internet as much as possible, to keep track of the different Internet resources and reflect on their personal growth.

3. Educational Great Internet Sites (20%) You need at least 20 sites for this assignemnt. Please use the Web site evaluation checklist that can be found on Page 128 of the text or electronically. Please note that you need an evaluation sheet for each of the sites chosen.

The objective is to take a critical look at the Web sites you find interesting and make a list that you will be able to use once the course is over.

DUE DATE : Assignment # 3, week of June 13 - 19 ( or earlier )

4. Multimedia Presentation (10%) You can use the following types of software for this assignment, KidPix Studio Deluxe, AppleWorks Slide Show, HyperStudio, Macromedia Flash or Power Point. PowerPoint Tips & Tricks and PowerPoint in the Classroom are helpful sites for PowerPoint users.

The objective is to create a multimedia presentation for use in your particular discipline which will include such things as sound, graphics, text and if possible video clips ( due to the size of some video clips this may be impossible ).

DUE DATE : Assignment # 4, week of June 27 - July 3 ( or earlier )

5. Create a Web Project (15%) Contact the tutor for ideas on what programs to use. Information can be found on the course Web site at Web Builder's Directory to help you get started. Also try Create It 101; Basic HTML, suggested by Robyn Davidson, Winter 2002. Here is another one that might help as well, PageTutor.com: HTML Tutorials & Javascript - Basic HTML Tutorial, suggested by Stephanie Brook, Winter 2002. And yet another HTML Tutorial - learning how to use HTML to create your own Web site. Here is something that I wrote called "Web Page Construction" that might help as well.

The objective is to create a Web Project based on an educational topic, publish it and use it in the school, eg. library, classroom, etc...

Here are the guidelines for Assignment # 5 :

1. Web Page editors, welcome
2. Try and make it as easy loading as possible
3. It must have a proper title
4. It must have a theme to it that you can discern
5. Make sure your background colour and text colours do not clash
6. Reference sources
7. Try your best to find a home for it on the Internet, eg. geocities, @shaw
8. Create links to other sites of a similar nature
9. Create more than one page and have each page linked to the first page
10. Add graphics but fast loading
11. Line spacers
12. If you want, you can add animated gifs
13. Easy to use
14. Reference to EDCI 396c and the author, ie. yourself
15. Email link to the author, i.e. yourself
16. Creation date
17. Please stay away from black as your background colour
18. If you have made it for a specific grade level, mention it
19. You can discern a plan of how it was put together
20. Contains text as to why you choose to do what you did

DUE DATE : Assignment # 5, July 11 - 17 ( or earlier )

6. Implementation (25%) : Plan your own Internet Web based PROJECT and answer "How will you use the Internet Knowledge you have gained during the course in your classroom and/or educational setting to further the education of your students ? Read pages 53 - 62 in the text for helpful hints in planning your project.

The objective is to encourage the student to search out the Web and find a place or places they can use in their classroom, eg. Space - a particular planet,or take a topic from any of the IRP's and finding where they can go on the Web to support it.

Another place for excellent ideas is to visit The WebQuest site , which provides online resources that show teachers how to construct their own Web-rich research units. Click on the following list for more helpful hints for WebQuests.

WebQuests

Assignment # 6 guidelines, are very similar to the Web page guidelines. Your final project can be based on a WebQuest but your own design is welcome as well !!

4. If possible it will contain a theme to it that you can discern, eg. SpaceQuest
5. If possible make a reference to the BC Ministry of Education IRP's
6. Please reference your sources
7. If possible, publish it on the Internet
8. If possible, create links to other sites of a similar nature
9. If in doubt follow the steps in chapter 3 in the text, Planning Your Own Projects
10. Add graphics but fast loading
11. Include how students will be evaluated
12. For fun if you want, you can add animated gifs
13. Your creation will be easy to use
14. Reference to EDCI 396c and the author, ie. yourself
15. Email link to the author, i.e. yourself
16. Creation date
17. Limit it to a specific topic
18. If you have made it for a specific grade level, mention it
19. I will be able to discern a plan of how it was put together
20. Explanation is there as to why you choose to do what you did
