Watto was a Toydarian merchant who lived on Tatooine. He owned a junkyard in Mos Espa from which he sold a variety of used mechanical parts, ranging from spaceship parts to droid components.

Biography

Watto was also a keen gambler, often betting on the local podraces, and occasionally even entering his own pod and pilot in the races.

The former owner of Anakin Skywalker and Shmi Skywalker, he lost young Anakin in a wager to Qui-Gon Jinn concerning the outcome of the Boonta Eve Classic in 32 BBY. Losing this bet marked the beginning of a period in Watto's life during which he lost many of his assets. This included Shmi Skywalker, who he was forced to sell to a moisture farmer named Cliegg Lars.

He was last seen by Anakin and Padmé in 22 BBY, when Anakin returned to Tatooine to find his mother. By then, Watto no longer owned a large junkyard, but had been relegated to a small stall.

When he decided to retire around the time of the New Republic era, he turned over ownership of his shop to Wald.

Behind the scenes

  • Like Jar Jar Binks, Watto was an entirely CGI-generated character. Watto was voiced by actor Andrew Secombe.
  • In addition to his appearances in The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, Watto received a starring role in the popular fanfilm Crazy Watto.
