B-1 battle droids were the droids that made up the Trade Federation Droid Army. After the Federation joined the Confederacy of Independent Systems, they became a part of the Confederacy's greater war force. They were designed for cheap mass-production. Other models, like droideka and B-2 battle droids, were more expensive and powerful.

B-1s were relatively mindless, and were usually slaved to a central control mainframe located on a remote starship or some other well-defended facility. This can lead to massive failure if the central control mainframe is destroyed, however. This occurred during the Battle of Naboo, in which Anakin Skywalker destroyed the Droid Control Ship. The resulting monumental defeat spurred interest in independent battle droids, and this technique gained ground following the battle.

Following the Naboo crisis, the Galactic Republic enacted strict legislation that prohibited the use of droid armies and the development of military hardware. The Trade Federation, however, relocated its droid foundries and laboratories to remote territories far from the Republic's jurisdiction like Geonosis. The Trade Federation also developed a new generation of B-1s with enhanced intelligence and independence.

When the Trade Federation became a member of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, it pledged its droid forces to the Separatist cause. B-1s would be the Confederacy's most common soldiers. They particpated in many battles including the Battle of Geonosis, Battle of Muunilinst, Battle of Coruscant and Battle of Kashyyyk, including numerous others. Following the execution of the Separatist Council by Darth Sidious's new apprentice Darth Vader formerly Anakin Skywalker, the B-1s were de-activated.

Trivia
