Sunrisers Happenings
(see here
for what we did in 2007)
The
Sunrisers are a busy bunch of people: (the latest events are at the top - scroll down to see more)
2012
May 2012:
Donations to three schools programs for high needs children May 1. Sunrisers
donated nearly $2000 shared between 3 local school programs for high
needs children. The donations were made at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre -
the programs use some of our funding towards entrance fees for the
children at the facility.. Bus passes and specialized computer software are also purchased.
The photo below shows two of the wonderful teachers for the programs,
with Sunrisers President Rose Davison on the right.. And there's
another below that, showing part of the Aquatic Centre.

April 2012:
The Sunrisers award 2 bursaries each year ($1000 each) to VIU students
living with a disability. This year, one of the recipients is Stephanie
Allen who hopes to pursue a career in audiology. Stephanie attended our monthly lunch meeting to tell us more about how the funding will help her in her educational goals. Photo below
shows Stephanie on the right, Sunrisers President Rose Davison in the
centre and Angela Howard who kindly acted as Stephanie's signing interpreter for our meeting

As we do annually, the Sunrisers gave a bursary of $500 each to two of
the talented winners of the Upper Island Musical Festival. In 2012 one
winner was in dance and one in vocals.
Two photos below. The top is Kelly Mathews - Senior Ballet and then Brittany Hannah– Senior Classical
Vocal with Bruno Tonolli, past president and founding member of
Sunrisers.
We congratulate them both on their skills and talents

Nanaimo
Mayor John Ruttan graciously raised the Kiwanis flag in late April in a ceremony that happens every year. April 21 was marked as Kiwanis International One
Day in recognition of the work Kiwanis does worldwide. To mark this special day, Mayor John Ruttan has
proclaimed this week to be in honour of Kiwanis.
The flag raising ceremony and
Proclamation Presentation was held at City Hall. The flag was in place for
5 days

we now have the permits for two events later in 2012. Space at
Departure Bay Park and a food permit for a Kiwanis Water Park users
appreciation day on July 7 (this is the first year and we've
started planning). And space at Brechin Ramp and a food permit
for our annual Bullhead Derby in mid August. ********************************

February 2012:
Our February lunch meeting was a big event with donations to and from Sunrisers and a prize presentation.
Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan joined us as the Sunrisers gratefully
accepted a generous cash donation from Auto Check Automotive – the results of
their November “Seeing Clearly to Help Others” headlight alignment campaign.
And at the same meeting the winners of our recent Lottery
received their prize of a 7 day Cruise. The beneficiaries of that lottery – Nanaimo’s
Community Kitchens – were given a cheque for over $1800 from the Sunrisers.
A great deal of time and effort went into the Lottery but
it’s an amazing feeling when you see the results. We are very happy to be able to help Community
Kitchens’ Bellies to Babies and Beyond program for a second year.

attendance and a lot of fun for all with presents, pizza and a draw for
