Club
History
Since
receiving our Charter in 1984, the Club has helped with many good
causes in our community. We have provided medical equipment for the
Hospital Foundation and donated bursary monies for the Upper Island
Music Festival and to VIU students. We hold an annual fishing derby for
under-12s and an Xmas party for high-needs children - see here for more.
One
of the
first fund-raisers of the young Club was to start up a 'cut your own
firewood' project. With a forestry company providing the
site, the Sunrisers manned a site from May to October and raised
$15,000 for NDSS.
Soon
after that the Club members
cut, stripped and transported timber and built a playground at
(then) Malaspina College.
The
club was also one of the first sponsors of the Port Theatre in Nanaimo.
We
continue to take pride in
helping young children and their families find solutions to their
concerns. Not everyone can make it on their own - sometimes they need a
helping hand along the way.
