Dave and I wanted to start a family. After some tests and procedures it was discovered
that my fallopian tubes are blocked. This means the only way we could have a family is by in-vetro
fertilization. After the egg retrieval and fertilization the doctor placed three
embryos in my uterus. On July 10th, 2001, my 33rd birthday, the clinic confirmed
I was pregnant. An ultrasound (u/s) was scheduled for July 31st. I experienced
some bleeding between the 10th and the 31st and expected the worst. The u/s showed
just the opposite; instead of losing the pregnancy I was expecting quads. The pregnancy
was relatively easy and passed quickly. At 19.5 weeks we learned that there were
3 girls and 1 boy. That was to be our last good u/s. At 21 weeks I had spotting
and an u/s showed my cervix shortening. A cervical cerclage was put in place the
next week. Unfortunately the cerclage didn't hold and I was hospitalized for bed
rest on Nov 19th. Bed rest was only successful for a week. At 24 2/7 weeks my
first child was born naturally. My cervix closed and I was placed in bed with my
feet higher than my head in hopes of buying more time for the others. That was
not to be. I became septic and the other 3 were delivered by emergency cesarean
at 24 4/7 weeks. Our quads had become individual little people.
