The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is truly one of the natural wonders of the world! In fact, to me it's one of the only places I've been to that doesn't look real. When I first saw the Grand Canyon in about 1990 my initial thought was that it looked like a special effect painting for a movie. I was on the south ridge of the canyon. If I remember my stats correctly, the south ridge has an elevation of 7,000 to 7,500 feet. The north face is up to ten miles away, and is at an altitude of 8,000 feet. The Colorado River runs through the bottom of the canyon, and is over a mile below the south ridge. I plan one day to both hike down into the canyon, and visit the north ridge. If you would like more information on the Grand Canyon, there are many web-sites. I did check and there is a tourism site at www.grandcanyon.com. I am sure any of the search engines can find many other sites.
I was in Phoenix, Arizona for a conference in November 2001 and took a day to drive to the Grand Canyon for a day of photography. Be warned, it's a 4 hour drive in each direction from Phoenix. But it's worth the effort if you ever get a chance! I shot 14 rolls of slides in the 6 hours I was there, and I would have gone on if nightfall hadn't descended.....
