Men at the plough 1850
The 1881 census lists Josiah as an "agricultural labourer" which means he was one of thousands who worked the farms owned by the upper class.  By 1901, he had become a "Carter" in the "Cooperative Store" which can be interpreted as a person in charge of a horse and wagon or simply a person who moves things about.

Before their marriage (1871 census), Ellen Parkin, had been working as a housemaid on a large estate belonging to a banker named Edmund B. Gibson.  The estate farms or 400 acres employed 3 maids and a nurse plus 13 men and 3 boys.  It is possible Josiah was one of the men.

Elizabeth Perry, Josiah's mother, was recorded in the 1891 census living in the home of Josiah and Isabella.  Elizabeth was unable to write.  Her "mark" is recorded on Josiah's birth certificate.
