Subject: Canadian WAAS - May 2002 status Newsgroups: sci.geo.satellite-nav Date: Thu, 30 May 2002 08:44:16 -0700 Recently someone suggested that Canada was developing it's own WAAS system, and this may have been misinterpreted to mean, like the EU, it's own satellites. For the current(May 2002) state of affairs about satellite navigation in Canada, Nav Canada has a PDF document "SatNav Transition Strategy": 5.2.2.3 WAAS Service In Canada Recent developments in the WAAS program suggest that it may be possible to obtain some service from WAAS in southern Canada. NAV CANADA will explore this possibility. The only viable way to obtain full WAAS service in Canada, however, is to field a network of reference stations linked to FAA master stations in the USA; this network would be called the Canadian WAAS, or CWAAS. NAV CANADA and the FAA have been planning accordingly since the mid 1990s. No decision has been made to fund CWAAS; 5.2.2.4 EGNOS Reference Station In Canada The Europeans have asked NAV CANADA to host an EGNOS reference station in eastern Canada, with ESA providing the hardware and installation. GPS satellites orbit from west to east, so a station in Canada would allow EGNOS to make an early determination of satellite clock and orbit errors, thereby increasing the overall accuracy of the system. Users in eastern Canada would be able to use EGNOS signals from the westernmost EGNOS GEO, so having a station in Canada improves service in that area.
