About CANgrid

CANgrid is a utility program for use with OziExplorer. When you click on a map in OziExplorer, CANgrid will display the Canadian NTS grid designation, and the British Columbia Geographic System map reference, for the location of the map click.

CANgrid is Freeware, and the current version is 1.0.2.

Usage

[CANgrid default window] To use CANgrid, first start OziExplorer, then start CANgrid. The CANgrid window is set to appear on top of other windows. You should close CANgrid before closing OziExplorer.

[CANgrid window] When you single-click on a map in OziExplorer, CANgrid displays three pieces of information about the geographic location of the single-click.

The NTS and BCGS designations are calculated, and there is no guarantee that there is a valid NTS or BCGS map with that designation. For example, if you click on an area in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of British Columbia, you may get a value for NTS and BCGS, but there would be no corresponding map if the grid area does not contain any part of the Canadian landmass. Or if you click on a map of Alberta to the west of Calgary, you will get a valid NTS grid designation, but the BCGS grid value that is displayed will not be valid.

[CANgrid Outside Canada window] If the map click in OziExplorer is at a location that is outside of Canada, CANgrid will display "Outside Canada" in the NTS textbox. This calculation is based on the bounding box values specified in the metadata for the National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) collection.

[CANgrid Outside BC window] If the map click in OziExplorer is at a location that is outside of British Columbia, CANgrid will display "Outside BC" in the BCGS textbox. This calculation is based on bounding box values taken from an Index Map for BC (139.5W, 114W, 60N, 48N).

[CANgrid Unsupported window] If the map click in OziExplorer is at a latitude north of 68°, CANgrid will display "Unsupported North of 68" in the textboxes.

Requirements

CANgrid is written using Visual Basic, and therefore requires the Visual Basic runtime files. These files may already be installed on your PC. I suggest you try out CANgrid first before spending any time wondering if you need to bother with the runtime installation.

For more information, you can read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article "VBRun60sp6.exe installs Visual Basic 6.0 SP6 run-time files". If you require this file, you can download it from Microsoft.

CANgrid makes use of the OziExplorer API. For this to work, you must have both OziExplorer and the API installed, and you must have a registered version of OziExplorer. Using CANgrid in these situations with an unregistered version of OziExplorer may cause CANgrid to 'hang'(i.e. stop responding).
