We drove "Ed" the CRV with three kayaks on top, to Montana and back.
glacier park   Fort Benton hotel   Fort Benton view   ready to go
On the drive down we took
the scenic route through
Glacier National Park.
  Our hotel in Fort Benton
was the towns most dis-
tinguished building.  Our
charming room was on the
top floor.
John our shuttle
man left us "potty" bags.
  The peaceful view from
the hotel looked down
river to our place of de-
parture.  The  air was a
steamy 35 or so.
A kind lady in a canoeing
group snapped our picture
after our stressful packing
job.  We each had several
bags of water.  It was hot!
We look good eh!
First camp   camp #2   nests   nests
The first stop at "Wood
Bottom" offered a little
welcome shade.  We took
a dip to cool off.  A breeze
picked up and clouds
moved in.  We found the
"real" site the next day.
  "There's a storm coming!"
We raced to this site at
Coal Banks Landing and
rushed to get the tents up
before the storm hit.  Hit it
did!  Dinner was delayed
while we sat inside waiting
  Never a dull moment along
the river banks.  Every turn
brought a fresh set of
amazing shapes.  These
nests facinated us.  What
are they?

  Surely these were built by
insects but no, they are
colonies of cliff swallows.

hiking to the hole
"About 10 minutes," Wayne said.  My poncho went on an sure enough the wind pounded and rain hit with a vengeance.  We pulled in and rafted.
Unusual land features were given tell-tale names like "Citadel Rock", "Steamboat Rock", "Dark Butte", "The Wall", "White Cliffs" or Deadman Rapids
The "Hole in the Wall" campsite had shelter to protect us from the 50mph winds.  It took two to stake a tent.  Dishes threatened to lift off.

In the evening after the wind had settled we set off across the desert to climb to the "Hole"
view from the hole

A view from the Hole-in- the-Wall.  Does it get any better than this?

Peaking through the hole; a very photographed spot.

Wonderful shapes confront you from every side.
Inside the "walls" is a spectacular canyon.

Judith Landing caused a little shrinkage!  Temper-    atures dipped to 9C.  My pee bottle cracked and leaked. Abby sold us beer.
Wayne lost his sunglasses for a few frantic minutes.  A knife hacked T-shirt became a defense against the relentless sun.

This may have been McGarry Bar.  It was reclaimed pasture with cows nearby.  A few pies had to be cleared.
Two very accomodating trees gave us shade for happy hour.

last campsite
In the evening after a fine dinner and smiles all around, we hiked across the field and climbed cliff toward this amazing rock.
Looking back toward camp, our friendly trees were the only green in the landscape.......
Canadian Lynx, dead steer, pigeon, rabbits, Can geese

These Big Horn sheep were on our list of wildlife sightings along with pelicans (100s), eagles (bald and golden), carp, deer, beaver, turtles, frogs,

The final campsite was a tough one to find.  We had numerous landings in mud and cow pies before this discovery.  Had refreshing soak in the river.
