I live in Calgary, Alberta. I'm an English teacher here. Before that I taught in Japan, and before that I was a reporter, editor, and editorial assistant at Canadian Press in Toronto. I wrote at a few newspapers around Canada before that, including the Edmonton Journal, the Canadian Press, and weekly papers in Alberta.

I began writing the content of this site as email to send home to friends and family. Recently a few people have told me I ought to put it all into a book someday. (Thanks, Mom!) I can't imagine it having that much appeal beyond the people I've been sending it to, but if you're reading this and I don't know you then perhaps I could be proven wrong. Hence this site. If you can read the entire journal archive while imagining you paid $10 or $12 for the privilege, and at the end you feel it would have been a good purchase, send me an email. And a check.

I'd like to know who my readers are, so if you think you'll be a regular visitor, please sign the guestbook.

The author. I somehow seem to have put my beard on crooked that morning.

Guestbook

New with Me:

02/09/22 - Moved home to Calgary, got a new place and a new job. Really missed a lot in the middle there.

02/03/03 - Almost definitely coming home in April. I have half-assedly investigated and abandoned two or three solid job leads in Japan, one in Tokyo for an utterly outrageous sum of money. I guess I just want to go home. I wonder what I'll write about back in Calgary? Freaky Canadians? No shortage of those I guess, and now maybe I'll notice them more.

02/03/01 - Up to 34 days on the mountain this season. Mostly icy and crappy, though. Feeling unfulfilled about snowboarding this year, too much quantity, not enough quality. Few new tricks learned due to persistent  icy conditions. Moving to Suwa for the snowboarding was a major tactical error.

02/02/27 - Had a barn-burner 30th birthday party at Schi Heil snowboard and ski rental shop. Slept in car, returned home at 7:30. Too bad I've waited until almost my last month in Japan to meet all these cool people.

02/01/16 - Bought a season pass at nearby ski area, snowboarding 4 or 5 days a week. Would be up there now if not for stinking rain. So few idiosyncratic adventures to write about, unfortunately.

02/01/10 - Just came home from snowboard/Christmas vacation to Canada, nice to make sure Canada's still there. Got a new board! Moved to a new junior high.

01/12/09 - Had first outdoor snowboarding day of the winter yesterday. Went karaoke-ing with a whole bunch of really cool folks I met through Senichi Hashimoto.
