Mostly, these are my suggestions. If you email me you, with an explanation, I'll list them here.

This is extremely pleasing music. The lyrics are interesting too, if deceptively simple. Sharon's voice is a marvel, in it's own way. The Band's site features a friendly forum. But why does it evoke the world of HP for me? This is hard to put in words. It reminds me of my youth, however, so that may have something to do with it. "Flux capacitor" is a standout. HP members: Bones (viola), Brown (vocals), Finch-Fletchley (vocals, guitars), Finnegan (bass), and Mrytle (ghost effects, percussion), with contributions by Bill Weasley (guitars), Tonks (keyboards) and Potter (guitars). |

Also UK based. Wonderful folk-rock sort of music. Not postured at all. I'd say a Finch-Fletchley side project. (After he finally breaks free of his day job.) "Park Slope Song" HP members: Finch-Fletchley (vocals, guitars) Lupin (drums, vocals), Bill Weasley (guitars, vocals) |

That influential left wing band, New Model Army, has many member side projects. This is my favourite. "Navigating by the Stars" is the CD name. It is substantial, haunting, at times unsettling music. Rather like the way the novels stay with us after we've put them down. From the track Home - "home is wherever they take you in". Standout track for me? "Green". Wow. (After the war, veteran type stuff - inspired by Stephen Wright's Meditations in Green.) HP members: Potter (vocals, guitars), with Parvati Patil (harmonica, theremin, divination, effects), Padma Patil (double bass) and Ron Weasley (drums). |

indie post rock |
Amazing, amazing side project of the major post rock anarchist band Godspeed You(!) Black Emperor(!). Beautiful stuff. Sonic Youth composed by Arvo Part. Their CDs "He has left us alone but shafts of light sometimes grace the corner of our rooms" and "Born into trouble as the sparks fly upwards" are my favourites. HP members: Abbott (vocals, piano) Bones (viola), Chang (cello), Corner (guitars), Macmillan (bass), Pucey (drums) |

Famous Canadian post rockers. Ranges from huge sound to tiny, intimate sound, but always with huge heart. Anarchist and symphonic, their music re-enacts the struggle for truth, or, in fact, hope, against overwhelming forces of darkness, decay and apathy. Sounds like the HP books to me. Standout tracks are "Moya" from Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada, and "Gathering Storm etc." from lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven. HP members: Bones (viola), Chang (cello), Corner (guitars), Lovegood (tape, vocals), Lupin (drums, vocals), Macmillan (bass), Pucey (drums), Bill Weasley (guitars) |

indie rock, pop |
American "third generation shoegazing" band. SKRATCH says “Swelling guitars swirl of a solid beat, while the vocals evoke an unspeakable longing. This is moody music, for late nights and Sunday mornings, eager to carry you away with its drama.” Standout tracks, from The Angel Pool, are "Swimming in the Deep End" and from the EP Suicide at Strell Park, the title track. HP members: Goldstein (guitars), Lovegood (tape, vocals), Pritchard (drums), Turpin (double bass), Zeller (keyboards) |

contemporary French composer |
A new CD called Œuvres Chorales has just been released on Virgin Classics, with an evocative Johan Warden photograph gracing the cover. Much of the music makes me think of late autumn evenings in the country. "Le chemin de Jérusalem" is my favourite, and "The Wanderer," based on a Georg Trakl poem. HP composer: Thomas |

pop/metal/punk |
Okay, so this is Sirius, in Azkaban, right, when he realises Peter Pettigrew is at Hogwarts with Harry and determines to escape and kill him! Yeah? "and I'm not breaking down/I'm breaking out/no sense in lost control" (from Hysteria) RE: Sirius/Remus ship "all of the love we left behind/watching the flashbacks intertwine/memories I will never find" (from Song for Absolution and Falling away with you) submitted by dorapye |
Well, they have to be heard to be believed. This is song-writing and studio work of the highest order. Comes from a place not unlike the ethical imperative I speak about regarding Rowling's work. Seeing them live would be as amazing as it is unlikely, as I don't think they've been to the west in a decade or more. From the pictured "birds of my neighbourhood" CD I suggest Lakes of Canada, Birdless and July. For more info, see the links on their website. For my thoughts about the band, see tim.html in a couple days. HP members: not sure yet |

Latest realease from these Labradford related artisists, in a CD/DVD combo package. On one of my favourite labels, Kranky . Some have called it haunting. Every element of sound is carefully applied, nothing extraneous.
