1998

February 27: OK, so it's just a beginning - it's still snowing out! But I did draw this nifty picture...

April 4: First time out in the garden! Started cleaning up the sun gardens. The shade gardens are still mushy.

April 19: I bought an actual liner for my half-barrel pond (was using a clear heavy-duty shower curtain). Can't believe a liner cost more than the half-barrel did! I cleaned the pond out today. Last fall, I'd meant to empty the barrel but it turned cold and froze up before I had a chance, and it worked out real well. Soon as the ice melted in it this spring, the cattails I'd dug up from the lakeshore last year started growing, as did the duckweed. So I don't have to go collecting new stuff this year.

April 24: Finished the last of the cleaning in the shade gardens. Now it's just moving some things around and trying to fill up the new garden.

June 2: Eeeeek! Winter's back! We've hit a cold snap, had frost last Thursday night (May 28) and there have been frost warnings every night since, lasting well into the coming weekend.

September 17: Summer actually did come. It was a nice year, too much rain in the beginning, too little at the end. We are having wonderful weather for this time of year, the daytime highs are in the mid-20's (C). But I'm starting to think about cutting down the dying stuff, there's not much left blooming now. Also trying to figure out what to do with my water hyacinths. I plan to over-winter them in an old aquarium but I never figured they'd multiply so much and I don't have the heart to throw any away, but I certainly don't have room for all of them.

#1 - Fill up this garden (dug in '97).
#2 - Dig a new strip garden along the sidewalk... the plan EVENTUALLY is to make this whole "triangle" area a garden.

How the projects are going so far....

#1 - (April 25) Dug out more stray grass, I thought I took care of that last fall, but the stuff keeps reappearing. There are places in the lawn that are bare, yet here where I've dug grass out, it's determined to grow.
(May 2) Finished transplanting divisions of hostas and daylilies. Planted some edgings of creeping Jenny and pussytoes. Planted some excess flax amongst the lilies (that were planted last fall). The lilies here (some) are just barely starting to poke through the ground. There's just a narrow strip left unplanted, but that will be taken care of soon... Hmmm, I think I need to dig a new garden!
(May 4) Planted one of my new trials here - Ligularia 'The Rocket'.
This is a photograph of the new garden in early May.
(Added July 24) This is how it looked at the beginning of June and the same view again at the end of June and finally in mid July.

#2 - (April 4) Done.
(May 4) Finished transplanting. This whole strip is going to be a border of Creeping Jenny (yellow leaf variety). This is what it looks like now.
(Added July 24) This is how it looked in mid July.

New Members of the Garden!

Lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver'
New hostas: 'Wide Brim', 'Big Daddy' and 'Undulata (Medio Variegata)'
New daylilies: 'Chicago Picotee Lace' and 'Lavender Dew'
Anaphalis Margaritacea (Pearly Everlasting)
Ligularia 'The Rocket'
Hydrangea paniculata 'grandiflora' and 'pink diamond'
Filipendula Vulgaris (Hexapetala) (Meadowsweet Dropwort) - lotsa names for one little plant!
Potentilla Nepalensis 'Miss Willmott'
Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) - Doing REALLY well, I bought 2 and each had 3 'satellite' babies, it's getting crowded in the pond! Took one of the babies out to the cottage. No blooms yet, though, as of the beginning of August.
(August 7) I went out to add water to the pond and was thrilled to discover A WATER HYACINTH IS BLOOMING! I am thrilled. It is so beautiful. (August 22) Two more have bloomed since, as well as the one out at the cottage.

Disappointments!

My Sweet William patch is almost non-existent this year.
Lost the Shasta Daisies.
Neither Goat's Beard nor White Mossy Saxifrage made it through the winter (however, these were new last year, so I didn't have a chance to become emotionally attached to them, LOL!)

May Photographs!

At the front of the house, heading to the rock garden, with bergenia (foreground) and pulmonaria in bloom.
A closer view of the pulmonaria (lungwort).
The rock garden, violets (foreground) in bloom.
The patio garden.
Let's see if I can get real confusing on my directions here: The north part of the west sun garden and the south part of the west sun garden.
The half-barrel pond with new water hyacinths.

June Photographs! (Added August 3)

A very bad taping job of 3 photos in order to give a panoramic view of the south shade garden in early June.
A partial view of the same shade garden in late June.
Part of the sun garden and the rest of the sun garden, featuring pussy toes in bloom in early June.
A partial view of the sun garden in late June.
The patio sun garden in late June.
Part of the half-barrel pond in late June. When I got the water hyacinths, they came with 5 of the little (darker) floating things, like the duckweed. You can see how it multiplied. By mid-July they had smothered out the duckweed and I started having to weed out handfuls every week. Very prolific critter, but pretty, the colours range from green to reddish-green. This is a (BAD) close-up of this floating plant. It measures about 1 cm across, and is bumpy like the leaves on a pyramid cedar. Anybody know the name?

Individual Photographs! (Added October 23)

These are new pictures of individual flowers that have been added to the Garden Map page listing:

New view around the east side of the patio, looking toward one end of the 'new' garden.
Replacement photo of one section around the patio.
Replacement photo of the entire patio garden.
