1997

Well, despite an April blizzard and a very cold spring, my perennials grew and put forth another summer's display. Many of the photos on the previous page's clickable map have now been updated. There are a few where this year's photos didn't turn out as well, or I neglected to take an angle, and for those I kept the old pictures.

This page is a collection of progress reports on what was happening this past summer. There are also a few photos that did not make it onto the clickable map (I couldn't fit all those little cameras in some areas!). I had all kinds of plans, but it ended up to be another year that I didn't get around to most of them. The projects that I have worked on (other than the usual moving around of perennials) were mostly very small. They are outlined below.

#1 - My first attempt at water gardening, I am going to try making a half-barrel pond.
#2 - Join up the sun garden to the rock garden (whoa!).
#3 - Construct a cedar archway for my honeysuckle vine to grow over (already done).
#4 - The biggy... start digging out some grass for another garden... probably a late summer/early fall project.

How the projects are going so far....

#1 - (May 23) Hahahahahaha... um... I bought a liner for my half barrel.
The water lily I bought has been spending the nights outside since May 30.
(May 31) Dug up a small batch of cattails from the cottage. Also collected some floating weeds (name unknown), as well as some duckweed.
(June 6) Bought a green winged teal duck (decoy) to swim around in the half-barrel. He loves his new home!
(June 14) Looks like about 4 leaves growing from the water lily pot, one of the leaves is about an inch away from the water surface.
(July 5) Six burgundy-coloured leaves at the water surface and about 12 more growing - no sign of any flowers yet.
(August 2) About 2 dozen small leaves, but no sign of a flower!
(September 27) Never did flower. Oh, well.

#2 - (May 24) Tore out the grass today... planted some divisions (veronica, pussytoes and edelweiss).
(May 31) Planted new additions (moss phlox and tri-colour sedum).

#3 - This picture is featured on the clickable map, but in case you missed it, here is the archway.

#4 - (August 2) I'm starting to think about it..... I'm starting to think it might be a nice spring project for next year.
(August 30) Yay! Today, the grass was cut out, a good thing cause I will be receiving some new plants (4 new varieties of lilies and a daylily) that were ordered for fall delivery (a birthday gift from my parents). The new garden ended up being different than originally planned, more a kidney shape as outlined in red on the above map.
(September 27) This past week, I dug over the new garden again (getting out the last of the grass roots) and planted the aforementioned new plants, as well as a division of red lilies from my mom.

What Came Up!

I wasn't sure whether they would survive our winter but they did:
Tri-Colour Kiwi Vine - It was really perky last year (its first year), but certainly not "tri-coloured", hopefully the colours will show up this year.
(June 14) The vine is doing wonderfully for its second year: very bushy, about a foot high and growing but the leaves are still just all green.
German Statice - Great! I won't have to buy this stuff for my crafts anymore.

New Members of the Garden!

(May 23) Liatris spicata 'Floristan White' - I have liatris already, but not the white variety.
(May 23) Goat's Beard, Aruncus Aethusifolius - This is a short variety, the foliage is very attractive.
(May 23) A red water lily
(May 26) Thrift or Sea Pink, Armeria maritima, 'Splendens'
(May 31) White Mossy Saxifrage, Saxifraga x arendsii
(May 31) Moss Phlox, Phlox subulata 'Emerald Blue'
(May 31) Sedum 'Tricolour' - Well, the tag actually said 'Tricolor' but this is a Canadian sedum.
(September 26) Buzz Bomb daylily, Asiatic lilies: Lollipop, Brandon Brushmark, Canadian Sunrise and Prairie Sunset.

Disappointments!

My Sweet William patch is pretty pathetic-looking this year.
Lost a lot of Matricaria, filled in the spaces with divisions of other plants.
Lost all but a shoot or two of Bee Balm, but that's Ok, it never did all that well for me, anyway.
My thyme patch is virtually gone.

June Photographs!

This is the rock garden looking south to north, the lily-of-the-valley are in bloom. (Not a very clear scanning, I know.)
The next picture is part of the back shade garden. I tried to be "artsy" framing it between the maple trees, haha.
Here is another view of the shade garden.

July Photographs!

Here are a couple shade garden views: one showing lilies in bloom and the other featuring campanula, columbine and lychnis.
This one is a view of the shade garden similar in location to the one in June (above).
This view is the sun garden along the west fence.
