One of my rock paintings.

2006

It's the beginning of May. I think this year I'm going to leave out the "What's Blooming Now" section. I was finding it too hard to keep up in the last few years. So, I'm going to simplify. One of these days I'll get around to how things are going so far.

At this time, there are no major projects planned. My wood violets are spreading like crazy, I might expand that section a couple feet. I definitely have to make a bigger daylily section. Somewhere for all my potential lady's mantle (tons of little babies have seeded in the lawn). Could divide the hostas...... All in all, more garden, less 'lawn'. Our lawn is really pathetic, I have no patience for it or inclination to keep it weed-free.

Disappointments!

Lysimachia clethroides 'Beaujolais' (gooseneck loosestrife)didn't come up this year.
Nor Blue-Eyed Grass, Sisyrinchium 'Rocky Point', except for one shoot.

New Members of the Garden!

False Indigo (Baptisia 'Purple Smoke')
Blue Spruce Sedum (ground cover)
Coreopsis Grandiflora 'Baby Sun' (tickseed)
Blue-Eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium montanum) - OK, now this just happens to have much the same name as the above "disappointment" blue-eyed grass I bought last year. THAT one was a Zone 4 plant with broader leaves. THIS one is from the cottage. What I found about it is that it's not really a grass, but a member of the iris family. Grows to 12" in any soil in full sun. It's a prairie wildflower, so should fare better than the other.
Valerian (valeriana officinalis) - A perennial herb with apparently very fragrant flowers. Good tip on this one from Venus F. at the cottage.

Gardening Notes!

May 13 - Here we go, first pic of the season. These are jonquils. I first bought them a couple years ago; they were left over after plant sale for charity at my husband's office. That year they just lay on the ground looking bedraggled. Last year, they came up but didn't do anything. This year I got blooms!!!

How about a whirlwind spring tour?

This is a quick (really quick) video of my gardens. It is an edited version of the May 24th video, because now the dame's rocket is in bloom. The middle portion of this version was filmed on Monday, May 29th. Plus I also added relaxing flower-watching music, so you wouldn't have to contend with traffic noises this time round. We start at the front (west) side of the house, moving down the rock garden to the back yard. A quick circle of the back yard, past the aforementioned dame's rocket (purple stalks), stopping briefly at the wild violets. Did you see Curses the elephant? Finishing with the front yard and the opposite (east) side of the house.

Hmmm, quality isn't the best, is it? Perhaps something in the way the hosting site uploads it to save bandwidth, I don't know. But it made my eyes buggy watching it here as opposed to the 'real' video.

Thursday, June 1st

LEFT: Lamiastrum Galeobdolon 'Hermann's Pride' (Yellow Archangel). (The purple is dame's rocket.)
RIGHT: Pelé is hidden. The Siberian Iris has grown very tall this year.

Friday, June 2nd (What I Did Today)

LEFT: Cut out more grass! More will be gone eventually, but I wanted to start a little nursery for all the lady's mantle seedlings. The babies shown are just 1/4 the amount of what I dug out of the lawn.
RIGHT: Reworked this area. Should have taken a 'before' pic (but you can catch 'before' briefly in the above video). Basically, I divided and moved the hostas around as well as placing 2 of the ferns behind the diftwood (they were in front of it before, where the blue hosta now is).

Friday, June 16th

A sea of blue. The flax is blooming everywhere!

LEFT: My red (lychnis) and white (matricaria) Canadian flowers! The matricaria is an iffy plant. I don't think you can really count on having a patch of it - some years it does better than others. This year it is coming up tall and abundantly.
RIGHT: The ever-recurring rock garden picture. Of course, except in early spring, you can't really see much of the rocks. My big hostas are just about covering the path. I'll have to remember to divide them next year. Of course, that means I'll need a new garden to put them in.

Another video, just of the front garden, a month after the last one.
